करतार सिंह समिति, 1973 की सिफारिश के बाद मलेरिया कार्यकर्ताओं, परिवार नियोजन कार्यकर्ता एवं अन्य स्वास्थ्य कार्यकर्ताओं को मल्टीपर्पस हेल्थ वर्कर (एमपीएचडब्लू) के रूप से नामित किया गया। इनका काम करने का तरीका बहुत अलग होता है यह उन क्षेत्रों में जाते है जहां अस्पताल या डॉक्टर उपलब्ध नहीं होते। जैसे पहाड़ी और आदिवासी इलाको में जाकर टेंट लगाकर उनका ईलाज करते है। स्वास्थ्य से जुड़ी किसी भी जरुरी चीज की आवश्यकता हो तो वह वो भी पूरा करते है। मरीजों के ईलाज के साथ-साथ यह आस-पास यह भी ध्‍यान रखते हैं कि वहां का पर्यावरण दूषित तो नहीं है, ऐसे में उस एरिया की साफ सफाई कैसे हो उसका भी ध्‍यान रखते हैं, ताकि वह इलाका रोग मुक्त हो जाए। महामारी में नियंत्रण करना,  लोगों को भोजन सामग्री पहुंचाना और किसी भी तरह की आपदा प्राकृतिक व गैर प्राकृतिक आपदा में घायलों के ईलाज की व्यवस्था करना और आपातकालीन स्थिति में उन्हें सकुशल बाहर निकालने की व्यवस्था करना उनके जिम्मे होता है।

कोर्स एंड एलिजिबिल्टी

डीपीएमआई की प्रिंसिपल अरूणा सिंह के मुताबिक डिप्लोमा इन मल्टीपर्पस हेल्थ वर्कर के लिए अभ्यर्थी का किसी भी संकाय वा किसी भी मान्यताप्राप्त बोर्ड से 12वीं पास होना जरूरी है। कोर्स के दौरान उन्हें आपातकालीन स्थिति या किसी भी तरह की आपदा की स्थिति में किस तरह समुचित मेडिकल सुविधाओं का प्रबंध करना है, उनकी तीमारदारी और सेवा कैसे की जाती है उसकी सीख दी जाती है। वे आपदा या महामारी फैलने की स्थिति में कैसे और किस हद तक तत्पर रहें। उन्हें महामारी या आपदा पर नियंत्रण करने, भोजन सामग्री पहुंचाने, जख्मी होने, या उनका उपचार कैसे किया जाए व उससे कैसे निपटा जाए उसकी ट्रेनिंग दी जाती है। इस फील्ड में आप एसएससी के द्वारा भी परीक्षा देकर किसी भी सरकारी पद के लिए आवेदन कर सकते है।

फ्यूचर प्रोस्पेक्टस

MLT works upon the direction given by the doctors. They are also responsible for the maintenance of the equipment. They not only know about the medical science but also know about the safety and security measures of the laboratories. The main work of a lab technician is to carry out results from the samples present in the lab but they are not specialized in predicting the final result of the samples provided to them. Focus on the course

For pursuing career in this field of medical sciences, one can opt for degree courses such as – certificate course, diploma course, bachelor, and master degree course consist of basic physiology, basic biochemistry and blood banking, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pathology, environment and biomedical waste management, medical laboratory technology and hospital administration.

Course and Eligibility

There are different courses in this field such as – Certificate in Medical Lab Technician (MLT), duration of the course is 6 months and eligibility is 10th pass from a recognized board or university. Diploma in Medical Lab Technology for this course the eligibility is 12th pass from a recognized board or university and the time duration of this course is 1 year and moreover, the applicant should have opted (PCB) physics, chemistry, biology or physics chemistry, maths in 12th. For B.sc in MLT, one has to do 10+2 with science stream and the duration of this course is 3 yrs.  For M.sc in medical laboratory technologists (MLT) program one should have 10th pass diploma certificate after that 2yrs associate program is necessary. These courses are offered either by program community college, technical school, vocational school or universities.
